Here is a photo of my clam in the shrimp tank.
I was hoping that these clams will help suck up some of the water fleas in my tank.
Anyone else have clams in their tanks?

This is a photo of my baby hillstream loach. I caught the mother of these babies in November. After 2 months I started seeing these very tiny thing wiggling around in my tank and now they are so much bigger ( they are almost as long as a 2 month old CRS )

Yup, one of them sucks in water and the other one blows out water...they even spit sometimes! Very rude clams!

That's a hillstream loach? The ones at my LFS are these flat, flounder-looking things that stick to the sides of the tank. Still, that's a beautiful-looking fish you have! I wish I lived near a body of water where I could catch cool stuff like that.
I was thinking of bidding on some "golden clams" or "Asian clams" over at AquaBid, but decided against it after reading up on them. How neat, though! I could definitely use some of those to help with my green water problem.

Well I just call them hillstream loach because I caught them at a Hillstream! :D
The scientific name of this fish is called Liniparhomaloptera disparis (http://loaches.com/species_pages/liniparhomaloptera_disparis.html) .
The one they called hillstream loach is called butterfly loach in HK so go figure.
I go to Asia a lot and I always try to make time to go hiking and try to find what's there lurking around in all the hillstreams. I have tons of mosquito bites to show for! Thank god I don't scar from the bites or I would look like a mutant or something :D

Yes, the one they call "hillstream loach" is the one that I know by that name. I've seen it at my LFS but have never purchased one for fear that I would kill it. It's also sort of creepy to see its underside  .

I have tried to keep them in my tank and let me tell you, they are not easy to keep alive. They die very easily.
I did find another loach that does VERY well in my tank. Here they call them Bermese Sucker Loach. They are the funniest fish. They have such a cute personality that I would sometimes just sit and watch them messing around with each other and piling on top of each other. They remind me of a bunch of kids. :D
I found them totally by mistake when I order some butterfly loach for a friend and my wholesaler gave me these. I put a few in my tank and I fell in love with them. When I tried to order them again they didn't know what I want so they order the wrong loaches for me three time before coming up with the correct name and got me these guys.
Here is a photo of one

Yeah they are doing just fine in my tanks. I had a few died initially but after that I have had no further losses so they must be finding enough floating thing to eat. :)

Great looking hillstreams you have. I love the baby, it's adorable. I have a bunch of Beaufortia kweichowensis the most commonly available type, sometimes called butterfly plecos. I like watching their hearts beating when they're against the glass.
Thanks for sharing your pics. :)

Hi GHz,
Where in the US are you located? You CAUGHT that loach that had the babies? Where? That's really neat!
So the final common name of the spotted one is Burmese loach - do you know the scientific name of that loach? I'd love to see if a LFS near me could get them.
Also, I've kept the golden clam(s) on two occasions. Each time, they died when the temperatures got too high in the summer. My tank temp was up to 82º, and it caused them to die. They were really interesting until then, though. Mine eventually half-buried themselves in the substrate, and then seemed to creep around the tank - I never saw them do it, so I don't know if they did it half buried, or if they had to come back up on the surface to move. But most mornings, they would be in different places than they were at lights-out the night before.
Nice pictures!

He is in LA. He caught the loach in Hong Kong stream. I am not sure where he is these days, so I answer for him. :D
I just bought 2 freshwater clams, they disappeared into gravel, I am not sure if I ever find the again. Do they shift their position inside gravel?

Sorry for not replying sooner. I have been in HK again checking out the local fish and shrimp scene.
Like Fruitpie said, I caught the loaches in a hillstream in HK when I was there in November last year. Usually I don't find that many loaches late in the year and I was surprise to see this big pregnant loach so I snatched her up right away. Come to think of it she did not put up much of a fight, it's almost like she was waiting for me to catch her. :)
She gave birth to at least 50 babies a few weeks after her arrival. All the babies have grown up now and I have a tank full of loachies.
These loaches have a very nice personality. They are active yet not destructive to plants. To date they are the best bottom fish for a planted tank that I have found in the wild. Also they keep my tank clean of algae just as good as SMEs.

hey gigahertz,
What procedures do you have to go through at the airport when bringing live fish and inverts into the country? Do you have to notify the Fish and Wildlife service?
