    wow, i even didn't read it like that. I thought the canister filter was on for 30 min and the undergravel all the time. Like this it is madness. Always keep a filter running all the time. The bacteria you need in the first place are aerobic. It will not work properly with switching of the flow of water.
    Also, if you want to get oxygen in the water, a constant flow is necessary. O2 leaves the water almost as fast as CO2. At least make sure to aerate in early morning when oxygen is lowest.

    But a high flow canister filter with a sponge on the inlet and a outlet on the surface will solve all this.

    If you have a canister filter without a sponge or something preventing the shrimps and shrimplets from getting in, you should check it out.

    I just found a whole colony in mine last night. At least 5 semi-adults and at least 5 shrimplets.
