Not really. Before I use the homemade mineral mix, they are surviving well too.

After I use the homemade mineral mix, they have much better looking shell, thick, shiny and whiter.

What breed of shrimp are you keeping? Maybe I can advise you more after knowing your environment.

I know that this is an old thread but after reading this fine write up on cycling ADA aquasoil, i still have one question in mind.
What is this 'wheat / vegetable powder' you keep talking about?
Is it flour? and where do you get it.

Powder, not flour. It is more coarse and is like tiny flakes. You should be able to find them in bakery section of Supermarket. Look for Wheat bran powder or wheat germ powder.

If you can't fine it, you can replace it with barley straw pellet. But do note that it will expand largely when in water, thus use sparingly.

Thanks, i found it under the bakery section. Do you used stabilized wheat bran or raw wheat bran?
Also, what does it do for the bacteria and aquarium during cycling?

Hmm.... I'm not sure what is stabilised form or raw form. I thought all wheat are already dried before they remove the bran and germ? I know germ is unstable due to the fatty acid will deteriorate but never know about bran needs to stabilised. Given said that, I believe mine should be a stable form as we don't have farm nearby to deliver raw/fresh form.

It contains sugar and protein that will feed the microbes; sugar and protein are the most basic food for bacteria. Also, it will decay after 3 days in aquarium and it will slowly release bio-load.

Do you mind if i share this write-up on a different forum because i have found this extremely helpful and think it might be helpful to others to? Credits will be given to you, BTW.
Also, when you add potassium carbonate/ baking soda, what sort of PH are you looking to reach?

    Hi jzang,

Actually, this version may be outdated. You can find the latest version here: http://www.shrimpydaddy.com/p/cyclin...anted-and.html

Recently, I have done more tests on ADA AS, thus I will be writing an even updated version probably by end of this year.

    Cheers.

But what PH do you buffer the water to in step 1 and 2?

pH wiill keep dropping, thus don't care about pH. Instead, use KH to judge. First use 4dKH water and then depending on how fast the pH drops, if drop to 6.0 within less than a day, then add another 4dKH. If it takes a couple of days to drop till 6.0, then add another 2dKH.
