K14 is the grade of the crystal. The Germans have a new or different grading system over the A/S/SS/SSS etc system.

You can see it here. http://crystal-red.de/aussehen.htm

Very nice Kazuya, thank you for sharing this. Love your shrimps and i know you will succeed in breeding them. It's like me when i started with shrimp keeping have many canisters connected in one tank. :)

Thanks MP.
For your help.

I got the idea from Shrimpnmoss over at TPT. He's helped me so much and also got me into wanting to have shrimp.

Next set up will be just 1 filter (limited room) maybe connect a 2211 to it, if possible.
All ready working on it.

The addiction kicks in bro, i mean when i was living in a small house where i can only put tanks in my room i had about 4 only and i thought it was enough hahaha. When i moved and have a basement then i added few more, i would love to set-up some more BUT time is not on my side right now. Good luck though setting up another tank, yes you will learn later on that you can set-up more tanks with all those canisters connected into one tank where you can have 3-4 tanks instead of one hehehe and they breed the same IME.

Just wondering how many cm of soil or how many liter of soil do you use on your set up?

I hear you man. We just have a small apartment. Once we get a bigger place I will definitely want at least 2 more tanks.

With Amazonia i use about 2-3 inches same as akadama. The beauty of using Africana is you could have an inch or less of that stuff and it buffers your PH down hard which i really like because you don't need much. I mean i have a 20g long tank 30" and i only put 1 3L bag of africana and from PH 7 it went down to 5.5 PH and has two air driven sponge filter which also raises PH, so that tells you it buffers pretty well.

Hi,
this grading system istn really in use in germany. Most prefer Hinomaru/Mosura/V Band and so on.
But the founders of this grading System imported shrimps some years ago which are well spread in Germany. some Keepers call them K14 and they dont know this old grading system.

Just got my TDS pen in today. Took forever to get here.
I tested my water with regular test.
pH 6.4
GH 4
KH 0

But my TDS reads 200.

How much water should I take out to lower my TDS?

Here you will find various calculators including water mixing

This in microsiemens so you'll have to convert your ppm

HI my friend, for me if your shrimps are doing good and very active I WOULD NOT CHANGE A THING. TDS 200 is not BAD, as i always say the more fiddling you do with your water parameters the more harm you cause on the shrimps.

That's reassuring to hear.

My Taiwans are active and eating.
Unexperience that I am I notice nothing wrong with them.

Even my tiny juvies are moving about too.

I'll hold off till next month or if I see levels go higher.

But other than that I do not know what to add.

Suggestions are welcome.

Don't add too much keep it open and clean. My next tank will be waaayyy more open like this. Maybe one piece of wood with moss and a couple of condos that it.

I might just add one piece of wood like my other tank.

Hi Cesar,
Interesting you also use Eheims (I also count on their extensive surface and flow to take care of the bio-filtration), but I don't understand completely your setup, you have a prefilter 2213 and then the 2215, but do they end up in the undergravel filter (outflow) or do they suck from the UGF in the first place?
Usually a UGF is used with the flow down into the gravel, but your idea of an "upwelling" UGF is maybe a good idea...
greetings
Mathias

Hello Mathias,

I use the filter to suck up the waste from the gravel first.
My whole substrate has eheim pro under it. This serves as a huge biological filter.

One tank I use has a pvc style ugf the other uses a plate ugf. Same setups though. Different filters.
Tank 2 uses a 2215 first then a ADA superjet, also connect to the UGF.

Hope this helps.

TitoC

Still confusing :-)
So you have 2 tanks:
1/ Eheim 2213 pumping in from an UGF
2/ Eheim 2215 pumping in from an UGF, with an additional ADA superjet on the outlet of the Eheim 2215
right?

Kazuya
15th Nov 2011, 10:35 PM
Sorry for the confusion.

Set up 1
UGF (pvc style) (Substrat pro under all my substrate)
2213 (Eheim sub pro) coarse pad on bottom only
2215 (ADA Bio Rio) coarse pad on bottom and filter floss on top. Still thinking of taking out the coarse pad
Spray bar for water going back into the tank.

Set up 2
UGF (plate) (Substrat pro under my substrate)
2215 (Eheim sub pro) coarse pad on bottom
Superjet ES600 (ADA Bio Rio) coarse pad on bottom filter floss on top.

All my filters have double taps for quick disconnecting for cleaning.

If still not clear. I will try to get pics for you.

Cheers.

Aha, now I got it. Thanks!
The confusion still has an upside: I think I will try to see what an upwelling UGF through some active soil will give... My experience is that the UGF becomes clogged after some months, and then the Eheim gets in trouble because it can not suck enough water through. Maybe pumping water into the soil will be more feasible in the long run...
