I just got some new imported shrimps. They should be so called C. cf. babaulti "Red back". These species it isn't absolutely. They seems like tigers without stripes, bluish with red back. (I just opened bag, so color may change).
I see on some shrimps round objects (not like balls, but horizontally round approx. 3mm and vertically only about 0.5mm). Color of it is something between red and pink. I red here time ago (according to some pictures), that it is some capsulated alien, with comment that offspring will not have it.
I'm afraid if that can attack also other shrimps. Or will it die when shrimp die.

Hi,
it really sounds as if you got Neocaridina palmata. They are mainly brown or grey or bluish. In German we call them "Nektarinengarnelen" or "Rotrückengarnelen" (red back shrimps) because of these red balls in wild caught shrimps which are actually capsuled parasitic worms. These are such a shrimps:

What ever it is, it sounds as if it does not belong into a normal shrimp. I guess these are parasites. In the case of Neocaridina palmata they don't harm the shrimp in a way I could notice it. Your shrimp and parasites could be different species. Observe them to see what will happen in the next weeks. Shrimps are weak especially after a long journey and a change of the water parameters, which is good for the parasite. BTW, some pictues would be interesting.

Here you can read more about the "Nektarinengarnelen" http://www.wirbellose.de/klotz/nektarinen.html . The text is in German. Werner found out later on that these shrimps belong to the species Neocaridina palmata bosensis CAI 1996.

best regards
Robert

Thats absolutely that "thing" and also that species. some seems like 2nd picture, some as first.

Can you or someone translate me shortly, what german page says?
I don't read in german.
Is it harmfull to shrimps or people or so? As I see from pictures, that will not multiply themself as I hope. Can I leave dead shrimp and attack other?
thanx a lot, I'm so confused about that, that I think about kill all affected shrimps and don't put them to my tanks.
