I need help, I'm new to the shrimp keepers thing, I have fish in well planted tanks. I got three cherry shrimp this past weekend and two of them have big yellow spots on their backs. Where does this spot come from? Does this have something to do with breeding? What is the gestation period?
Thanks

What you are looking at may be the developing eggs in the, for lack of a better term, ovaries, which are in the "neck" region. They will stay there until the female has a full batch and is ready to have the eggs fertilized by a male. Once fertilized, the eggs will move from there to underneath the carapace, where her swimmerettes/pleopods are. The female will care for the fertilized eggs for 3-4wks, at which point the eggs will hatch into benthic shrimplets and begin eating algae and such pretty much right away. The hatchlings are 1-2mm in length.

I guess it's all nicely explained by retardo. :D Good luck and hope you see egg carrying mamas soon! :)
