I have always thought I had the common type of Java moss but not until I saw some of the other moss photos and now I am confused as to what type of mosses I currently have. One of them was given to me as Xmas moss. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help identify the species of the following two mosses below:

Type A:

Type B:

Check out Aquamoss (http://www.aquamoss.net) and compare it to the pix there. I'm not sure what mosses you have, but I'd sure like to get my hands on some! Those mosses look great!!

it is almost impossible to identify mosses with the help of normal pictures. Their appearances vary too much. All you can do is to say it's a Vesicularia or a Taxiphyllum species. But it isn't possible to tell you which species it is without the help of a microscope.

Especially Versicularia dubyana, Singapore Moss, varies a lot. It can look very similar to weeping moss and even weeps or it looks like Christmas Moss or totally different. It depends on the light and many other factors.

I would say that your "Type B" is a Taxiphyllum species. I'm not sure about the first type. But I think it is the same genus.

BTW, I kept so far about 15 species of mosses and liverworts. Singapore moss is still one of my favorite mosses. I also love weeping moss, the best looking moss in my opion. But almost every moss species can look nice under good conditions. Sometimes it is just quite hard to find these conditions.

best regards

Retardo: Thanks for the link to aquamoss, I have actually seen that website but the more I look at those photos the more I am confused!!!!! lol!!

Robert: You are absolutely correct that one has to look under the microscope to verify the species and that lots of external factors affect the shapes! I have the same moss in two different tank and they grow slightly different shape!

My conclusion so far is that the second photo is the common Java moss. The first photo remains to be confirmed.

I agreed with you on the Java moss ID. Do you inject CO2 for to the tank?

The first moss has been growing for 3 months before I acquired the 2nd (now confirmed to be Java Moss) one month ago. Yes my tank has DIY co2 supply.

According to an article by Prof Tan from Singapore

According to this article and the photos of the leaf shape, my moss looks like either Xmas or Singapore Moss! Don't you think so??

The first moss is beautiful. It doesn't look like Singapore moss to me. :)
