• Atyaephyra Desmaresti

English name: European Shrimp, Freshwater Shrimp
Scientific name: Atyaephyra desmaresti MILLET 1831
Origin: in south, west and central Europe as well as in the Danube river basin, originally from the mediterranean region
    Size: 2,5 cm - 3 cm or 1 - 1.2 inches
    Water temperature: 10C - 28C or 50F - 82F
    Water parameters: pH 6.5 - 8
High or low breeding form: Low (but they dont need brackish water)
    Behaviour: Non-aggressive
    Difficulty: Easy
Description: They can be found in most European freshwater streams in south, west and central Europe as well as in the Danube river basin.
These shrimps change color, mixing with the surrounding environment, using some sort of camouflage. They have a wide variety of colors, from blue to red.
Females are bigger than males and have stronger colors. Each female produce from 300 up to 1500 eggs. They have a larval stage, but dont need brackish water to grow up. Due to the small size, larvaes are often eaten by other animals, so its difficult for them to reach the adult stage.
My experience on this species: They like shadows, and are able to change color in order to feel safe.
Remarks: They are peaceful and have a life expectation of more than 2 years in cpativity. In nature they live for a maximum of one and a half years and breed once a year only. Breeding season is from spring until late summer.
