• Red Nose Shrimp Breeding

    This arcticle explains how to breed Red Nose Shrimp larvae in brackish water.

    Equipment List:

    • Small tank, preferably with cover to reduce evaporation
    • Heater to maintain constant temperature
    • Air pump and air stone
    • Light
    • Liquifry
    • Male and female shrimp
    • Marine salt mix
    • Hydrometer

    Set-up the breeding tank as you would a tropical freshwater tank. I placed the air stone just below the surface of the water. I have observed previously where larvae had hit a wall of bubbles and then disappear. It was difficult to know if it was just jumped away or whether it was fatal. Placing the air stone just below the water surface would help to agitate the water surface and minimize the risk of larvae damage (I also ended up changing the orientation of the airstone to a horizontal position). Since there will only be 1-2 shrimp in the tank at first, you can probably get away without cycling the tank. Instead, I added a clump of Java moss. If you have the time, it would be preferable to cycle the tank but I was never organized enough. No substrate is used.

    Unless you are sure of the sex of your shrimp, leave them in the main tank until the female has eggs. Once you have a pregnant female, transfer her to the breeding tank. Otherwise, you can place the breeding pair in the tank and wait. I've done it both ways. Once your female has eggs, remove the male. Then remove most of the Java moss as well. Once the eggs hatch, it will be difficult to remove a tank full of Java moss without also pulling out some larvae. Keep a daily watch as the female doesn??t hold the eggs very long. In my latest trial, the eggs were held for 11 days prior to hatching. Once hatching has taken place, remove the female. Then keep the light on 24/7 to grow algae as a food source. Remove the rest of the Java moss, otherwise it dies when the salinity increases and likely adversely affects the water quality.

    You will now need to increase the salinity of the water to a chosen plateau followed by a gradual decrease to freshwater. I have used a target salinity of 24 ppt. I basically split the difference between 17 ppt as recommended elsew here for Amano shrimp and full strength marine water. I did this by removing water from the tank and replacing with full or half strength marine water, previously mixed and aerated as per the manufacturer's directions (Instant Ocean).
