This shrimp has a wide range of pattern/shrimps even in wild forms. It can be recognised by 4 white dots on tail and orange-brown nose and tail. There are many others species, which look similar to this shrimp but only the genuine bee shrimp shows orange (wild type). It is very sensitive to nitrogenous waste and best keep in water temperature of 25°C.

In Asia, a priced bred form is those with wide bands of solid white. This shrimp, the ancestor of crystal red shrimp, is often used by hobbyists to widen the gene pool of crystal red shrimps.

The Crystal Red shrimp is a recessive mutation of the bee shrimp. It has a reduced amount of melanin (black pigments) but it is not a albinotic mutation. The color bee shrimp / Colorbienengarnele is a variation of the wild type which shows only little white.

Bee shrimps can cross-breed with tiger shrimps. The offspring is fertile and as hardy as bee shrimps.
